As well as being a first-rate intellectual, committed socialist and thoroughly decent person, Anthony Arblaster was incredibly sharp-witted. In the 1980s, when the dean of our social sciences faculty at Sheffield University proposed the establishment of a chair in entrepreneurship, Anthony summed up the collective horror at such a politically rightwing-inspired idea by responding: “Why don’t you ask us to approve a chair in trade union militancy?”
