Letter: Andy Fraser’s haircut expulsion was a sign of the times

I was interested to see Joel McIver’s obituary of Andy Fraser, not least because I was in the year below Andy at St Clement Danes grammar school when he was expelled, circa 1967, for refusing to get his hair cut.

I well remember the haircut inspections carried out after morning assembly by the headmaster. If your hair was judged to be too long you were usually given half a crown to nip off to the local barbers for a trim. This saved my folks the expense, and the barbers became pretty full of fellow long-haired pupils who were also ensured of missing a double chemistry lesson, or some other feared classroom appointment, while getting their hair trimmed.

St Clement Danes was also home to Glen Matlock of the Sex Pistols a few years later. The hair rules were probably a bit more relaxed by then.
