The “lippiness” that Alan Dossor showed as an actor and stage manager at Nottingham Playhouse included rebellious practical jokes. On one occasion in 1965 he swapped his tiny role in Measure for Measure and learned John Shrapnel’s larger role of Claudio for one highly accomplished performance while John Neville, the artistic director, was away filming.
Though a brilliant actor and a fine director, he was hopeless as a stage manager, as I found when as design assistant I was given his help in making props.
