Via Media Matters, conservative firebrand Bill O'Reilly betrays his ignorance of the Judeo-Christian heritage he purports to defend against the bogeyman of the atheist left. Read on ...

On the November 13 edition of his nationally syndicated radio show, while discussing the "secularists" and their refusal to acknowledge the "holy war going on," Bill O'Reilly cited the Book of Revelation, the final scripture in the New Testament, saying, "This was written - what? Five thousand years ago?" But the Book of Revelation, which addresses the end of the world and the return of Jesus Christ, was, according to the book itself, written by "John" on the Greek isle of Patmos, after receiving "[t]he Revelation of Jesus Christ" (who was born about 2,000 years ago). [emphasis added]

If a patriot like O'Reilly, who proudly declares that he "fights the good fight for the soul of America" against "those who want to change America into a 'secular-progressive' country," has missed the most obvious textual clues on the New Testament's origin, then we must be slouching towards Gomorrah even faster than Robert Bork imagines! Perhaps the Factor's host can take solace in one unintended consequence of his gaffe: by revealing his own ignorance, O'Reilly may have made a strong case for teaching the Bible in public schools as an essential document of cultural literacy.
