Let us know if you think Manchester needs more cycle lanes

Cycle lanes in Manchester have become a topic of debate following a serious injury to a cyclist on Great Ancoats Street, and we want to know if you think the city needs more room for cyclists.

The major road leading into the city centre saw a £9 million upgrade which finished work in 2021. However, the revamp did not include the addition of any cycle lanes.

On Sunday May 15, a cyclist was rushed to hospital with 'life threatening' injuries following a collision with a car, with road users having since named the road a 'death trap'.

Some readers have already commented on the issue, with one saying: " Great Ancoats Street isn’t suitable for cycling. I’m not sure why people choose to put themselves in danger cycling it.

"Personally I have experienced so many cyclists not stopping at red lights, darting out of side streets without stopping, cutting across lanes to turn right without giving a signal, and nearly running into pedestrians.

" But I’ve also witnessed cars not making room, speeding, cutting up cyclists on left turns etc... there needs to be much better planning of the roads."

Another reader also shared their thoughts, saying: " Motorists have had it their own way for too long and will need to accept they need to share the road with more vulnerable users.

"Transport infrastructure in cities needs to focus on cyclists and pedestrians alongside public transport."
