Have you ever considered taking your kids to a library? The place may seem out of touch and not so relatable, as we already have much of the information we need right at our fingertips, with internet access.
But these old-school venues still have their own charms, and most importantly they're packed with books of different genres that anybody can get lost in. They also make for an affordable pastime for an entire family. And seriously, where better can you instil a sense of readership to any young person than a place full of books?
If you're looking for a place to start, try heading to the recently unveiled HSBC Lumpini Park Children's Library which, as the name suggested, is located right in the park itself. Libraries today can be different from the ones we grew up with. Forget a quiet and serious place filled with old tomes, even though there are still many of those in the city, of course. Inside Lumpini Park, you'll notice a striking red-and-black ladybug-like building. This children's library marks a collaboration between Bangkok city and the HSBC in creating a fun and modern learning centre for kids, all with a bright and colourful interior and even a small slider to match.
The library is divided into two sections. The readers section, where books can be found, is located on the ground floor, while upstairs is an open area lined with artificial grass fit for organising activities. There are also plans to provide children's activities such as lessons in the English language, financial literacy, DIY projects and recycling materials to create new items.
The public library has been located in Lumpini Park since 1955. Through the years, it has been renovated and made into a discovery and learning centre. Now, with a revamped section especially for children, this public library is an all-the-more attractive choice for families looking to spend time together. Plus, everyone can get a nice walk or a picnic in the park.
The HSBC Lumpini Park Children's Library is open from Tuesdays until Saturdays, 8.30am-8pm, and Sundays, 9am-5pm. It is closed on Mondays and public holidays.
