Let steam take the strain (and save the environment in the process)

Modern life may not be as rubbish as Blur's Damon Albarn would have us believe, but it is nevertheless full of unnecessary irritations. Take doing the laundry for example. If you're a busy professional and/or have a child or two in tow, then it's last thing you need to waste time doing. Yet it has to be done.

So, what's the solution? Well, those clever folk at LG have come up with something that could help - a large capacity washing machine which steams your clothes.

At 9kg, LG's new washer is the only standard size model available in the UK to offer both a bigger capacity and steam cleaning. The new range has been developed following extensive consumer research which revealed that capacity and steam capability are the most appreciated features when choosing a washing machine.

Why? Well, for a start the deeper drum means you can spend less time doing the washing because it can swallow larger loads with ease.

As Simona Allan, marketing manager, LG Electronics, says, "Capacity is becoming one of the most important factors when choosing a new washer. Today, people naturally want to spend less time doing chores and more time with their families and loved ones. LG's new largest capacity steam washer allows them to do just that."

It's not just about size though. An intelligent washing function detects the exact load weight (from 1kg to 9kg) and automatically determines the programme length and amount of water needed. That saves time but just as importantly saves energy and water. Over a year, it is estimated to save a whole month's energy and water in fact – perfect for environmentally aware families who think turning it down to 30∞ is the least they can do.

But the key feature of this model is the aforementioned steam technology, a world first from LG. The innovative steam refresh function removes wrinkles and odours from clothes in just 20 minutes, using steam rather than water, perfect for busy professionals with no time to spare. The Steam Direct Drive has been rated A++ for energy efficiency, using 35% less water and 21% less energy than traditional A-rated machines.

And that's not the limit of the technological wizardry boasted by the new range. Its allergy care programme, which has received approval from the British Allergy Foundation, uses the same steam technology to help eliminate allergens, mites and even residual detergent, all of which can cause respiratory or skin allergies.

As well as looking after your body and the environment, the 9kg washing machines are also rather good at their primary function, looking after your clothes. They feature an embossed drum which has been designed for optimum fabric care and better washing performance, as well as creating minimal friction to ensure a smooth, gentle wash.

Speaking of smooth, this washer is exceptionally quiet and reliable thanks to LG's patented DirectDrive motor. Rather than using belts and pulleys, the motor delivers power directly to the drum, drastically reducing noise and vibration and extending the life of the washer. This also creates a quieter environment so washing can be put on at night.

Despite packing in all of these techno goodies, this new range hasn't sacrificed looks at the altar of innovation. Indeed it delivers the perfect combination of smart technology and stylish design - the phrase "white goods" is a little misleading when applied to such machines. The Steam Direct Drive comes in a classy finish of silver and black so it can slot comfortably into the kitchen without compromising the aesthetic of the home.

LG's new Steam Direct Drive range is available from retailers nationwide, with prices ranging from £599 and £799 (RRP). But you could always enter our competition and win one of your own.
