'Let’s make it memorable!': Shubman Gill's first reaction after being named Gujarat Titans skipper

NEW DELHI: Star India batter Shubman Gill is quite elated on being named skipper of Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Gujarat Titans (GT) after former GT captain Hardik Pandya was traded to Mumbai Indians on Monday.

Gill took to social media platform 'X', formerly Twitter, expressing his pride in assuming a new role and extending his gratitude to the franchise for placing their trust in him.

"I am proud to assume the Captaincy of Gujarat Titans and I cannot thank the franchise enough for their trust in me to lead such a fine team. Let's make it memorable! To all the fans... #AavaDe," Gill wrote on X.

Gill has compiled an impressive record, accumulating 1373 runs in 33 innings at an average of 47.34, which includes three centuries and eight fifties.

The last season was particularly significant for the opener, as he notched up 890 runs in 17 matches at an outstanding average of 59.33. During this remarkable season, Gill hit three centuries and four half-centuries, earning him the prestigious Orange Cap as the leading run-scorer in the tournament.

The opener played a pivotal role in Gujarat Titans' sensational run since their debut in the IPL. In the last season, he delivered a remarkable performance by scoring 129 runs in 60 balls against Mumbai Indians, achieving the highest individual score by a batter in the IPL playoffs.

"I am delighted and proud to assume the captaincy of Gujarat Titans and thank the franchise for their trust in me to lead such a fine team. We have had two exceptional seasons and I keenly look forward to leading the team with our exciting brand of cricket," Gill said after the announcement.

After clinching the Indian Premier League (IPL) title in their debut season in 2022, GT showcased consistent performance by reaching the finals in the subsequent season, where they lost to Chennai Super Kings (CSK).

Gill's outstanding batting prowess was evident as he hammered three centuries in the last IPL season. Only Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) batter Virat Kohli in 2016 and Rajasthan Royals batter Jos Buttler in 2022 had more centuries in a single IPL season, each scoring four centuries.
