Let's Go Hydro clears up confusion over drive-in cinema showing footage of republican Bobby Storey's funeral

Let's Go Hydro has cleared up confusion over its drive-in cinema showing footage of Belfast republican's Bobby Storey's funeral.

One of its large outdoor screens was spotted on Saturday evening displaying footage from the funeral, which took place in June.

Clips of First Minister and DUP leader Arlene Foster attending a Stormont committee were also seen on the big screen.

Let's Go Hydro said the BBC's Spotlight programme had hired a screen as part of filming for a forthcoming 'review of the year' edition.

The resort outside Belfast said this "had nothing to do" with its closure under the current coronavirus restrictions.

It said on Facebook: "For anyone asking, the BBC confirmed it had private hire of one of Let's Go Hydro's screens on December 5.

"For a forthcoming programme – a review of the year – BBC NI projected archive footage of various moments from 2020.

"This had nothing to do with Let's Go Hydro's current closure under the restrictions."

The BBC also confirmed its Spotlight programme team was using the outdoor cinema for filming as part of an upcoming episode of the current affairs series.

A spokeswoman for the broadcaster said: "BBC Spotlight had private hire of one of Let's Go Hydro's screens on December 5.

"BBC NI projected archive footage of various moments of the past year for a forthcoming programme – a review of 2020."

Let's Go Hydro added a drive-in cinema experience to its offering earlier this year to allow customers to watch films on the big screen during the Covid-19 pandemic.

In June, hundreds gathered in West Belfast for former IRA figure Bobby Storey's funeral including senior Sinn Féin representatives.

It sparked a row at Stormont, with other parties accusing Sinn Féin of breaching coronavirus restrictions on gatherings and undermining the executive's public health message on the pandemic.

Cumbria Constabulary's Deputy Chief Constable Mark Webster was appointed to oversee a PSNI investigation into the funeral.
