Let's give him a proper Manc send-off - funeral fund launched for Piccadilly Rats frontman Ray Boddington

A fund has been launched to give the late Piccadilly Rats frontman Ray Boddington 'the send off he deserves'.

The Manchester icon suffered serious head injuries when he was hit by a tram on High Street in the city centre near the Arndale on April 10.

He died in hospital on Thursday. He was 77.

It is believed Ray was on his way home after performing at The Millstone pub in the Northern Quarter when he was struck by a Metrolink tram at around 7.30pm.

He had been on a life-support machine at Salford Royal Hospital as his family kept a vigil by his bedside.

Following his death and an outpouring of public affection for Ray, his family has set up a gofundme page to pay for a fitting funeral.

The page said the aim was to 'give Ray the send off he deserves', adding that 'he was the heart of Manchester'.

He was 'an amazing dad and friend to everyone', according to the web page, which went on: "It's hard for the family at this time. Let's make it easier for them and give Ray the biggest thank you he's ever had from all of us.

"He didn't deserve to pass and it's heartbreaking to everyone, so let's do this and show how much we all loved Ray."

Ray's devastated son Daniel Boddington, speaking to the Manchester Evening News on Thursday, said: "All of his family were there, at his bed. My dad would have wanted everybody in Manchester to know that he loved them all.

The Piccadilly Rats lineup included founders Gaz Stanley as well as the late Ray Boddington - plus an array of friends they've met along the way, including Tommy Trouble, drummer Alan Jones, and teenage bassist Robert Branch.

As well as their performances in Manchester city centre, the band has played at festivals including Kendal Calling and Parklife.

The tram was travelling from Market Street, in the direction of Manchester Victoria, when the collision took place at the junction of High Street and Church.

An investigation into the collision continues.
