On August 10 local music lovers were given a real treat. The popular American dance-rock band DNCE were in town playing their very first show in the kingdom. Part of BEC-Tero’s Soundbox live music series, the concert was a huge success, as the LA-based four-piece brought all the fun and energy that they are famous for.

DNCE — singer Joe Jonas, guitarist JinJoo Lee, bassist Cole Whittle and drummer Jack Lawless — rose to fame worldwide on the back of their smash hits “Cake by the Ocean” and “Kissing Strangers.” As well as these popular originals, the concert also saw the band play covers of classics by David Bowie, George Michael and Britney Spears. Whether they were dancing, running around or waving the Thai flag, the band-members knew how to entertain the appreciative crowd.

Moments before they were due onstage, S Weekly took part in a group interview with the dance-pop stars.

How’s the Asian tour been going so far?

Joe: It’s been amazing. We’ve been to so many different places and it feels like just the beginning. We can’t wait to come back.

The next stop is South Korea. JinJoo, how do you feel to be playing in your homeland?

JinJoo: I can’t wait! It feels amazing to be going back to play in the place where I grew up.

How would you describe your music?

Joe: I think it’s really sexy. There are funk and soul elements in it. It’s fun and wild, but I think it’s also music that you can listen to in your bedroom.

You recently collaborated with Luis Fonsi and Nicki Minaj on the remix of “Kissing Strangers.” How did that come about?

Joe: It happened very organically. We sent them the song and they sent us back the remix. We’re thrilled because everybody seems to like it.

Can you tell us a bit about the next album?

Cole: Sure, the new music we’re writing is very exciting. After the release of “Kissing Strangers,” we felt like we were moving on from our last album and into the future. We’re collecting ideas now, and we can’t wait to release new music for our fans.

What are the band’s ambitions?

Cole: We want to be around forever and to be the biggest band in the world. That’s what we feel like onstage and in our hearts. We don’t ever want to stop.

Where do you see yourselves in 10 years’ time?

Joe: We’ll probably be here in Bangkok, hanging out and playing concerts. Hopefully, we’ll have released 50 albums by then!

With your song “Cake by the Ocean” in mind, if you were a cake, what kind would you be?

Cole: I’d be everybody’s birthday cake!

Joe: I’d probably be a red velvet cake, because it’s very smooth and has cream cheese in it. I’m from New Jersey, and we had a lot of cream cheese when I was growing up.

JinJoo: I’d be a cotton candy cake.

Jack: I’d be a chocolate cake for sure.
