Less than 30 per cent of England's towns and cities are now seeing a drop in Covid cases - with seven out of 10 recording a week-on-week increase.
Latest Public Health England data reveals that just 87 of the country's 315 local authority areas had fewer Covid cases than the previous week in the seven days to Sunday.
Meanwhile the vast majority, 225 - 71 per cent of places - saw a rise, while three remained the same.
North Devon, Oadby and Wigston, Peterborough, Sedgemoor and Hinkley and Bosworth are among the areas which saw the steepest increases.
Lincoln continues to have the highest rate, with 588 new cases in the seven days to Sunday - the equivalent of 592.2 per 100,000 people.

This is down from 757.3 in the seven days to August 1.
Hull has the second highest rate, up from 543.2 to 587.8, with 1,527 new cases.
Exeter has the third highest rate, up slightly from 575.3 to 579.1, with 761 new cases.
The five areas with the biggest week-on-week rises are:
- North Devon (up from 241.9 to 392.2)
- Oadby and Wigston (257.8 to 403.4)
- Peterborough (329.8 to 469.7)
- Sedgemoor (207.0 to 337.7)
- Hinckley and Bosworth (284.6 to 403.9)
Covid cases across the UK have risen by 8.6 per cent in the past week, while a further 94 lives have been lost to the virus.
Latest Department of Health figures reveal that 33,074 people have tested positive for coronavirus in the last 24 hours.
A week ago there were 29,825 cases, while a month ago, on July 12, there were 33,998.
Nearly 200,000 cases have been confirmed in the past week, with 615 fatalities bringing the official death toll to 130,701.
In spite of the rise in cases, hospitalisations have fallen by 5.4 per cent in the last seven days, with more than 5,300 people admitted.

Earlier today official figures claimed that more than 84,000 deaths have been prevented because of coronavirus vaccinations, along with 23.4 million infections.
Public Heath England also said that nearly 67,000 hospital admissions were averted thanks to the vaccine rollout.
Dr Mary Ramsay, head of immunisations at Public Health England, said: "As cases have increased, the true scale of protection from the vaccine programme has become clear. Everyone that has come forward for their vaccine has played a part in this vital effort.
"It's important that people under 30 years of age continue to take up the offer of the vaccine. Infection rates are highest in this age group, and Covid-19 can be serious for some."
Infections have risen in all regions of England except the North East, according to the latest weekly surveillance report from Public Health England.
Yorkshire and the Humber has the highest rate, with 372.4 cases per 100,000 people in the seven days to August 8, up week-on-week from 359.7.
The East Midlands has the second highest rate: 338.5, up from 312.7.
South East England has the lowest rate: 255.0, up from 234.0.
In the North East the rate fell from 325.5 to 286.4, encouraging data shows.
