Less than 0.05 per cent of people of people have coronavirus in England, new figures suggest.
Analysis of swab tests found that around 25,000 people throughout the entire country had Covid-19 at any given time between June 14 and June 27, according to Office for National Statistics (ONS) data.
This is equivalent to 0.04 per cent of the population, or around one in 2,200 people, the ONS said.
The research, conducted using swabs from more than 23,000 people, focused on infection rates within the community.
It did not include care homes and hospitals, or other institutions.
The ONS said its estimates suggest the percentage of people testing positive for the disease has decreased since the first analysis was done on April 26.
“This downward trend appears to have now levelled off,” it said.
A separate study of around 3,200 people given an antibody test, suggests that around six per cent of the population have developed antibodies against the virus.
This equates to one in 16 or 2.8 million people in England.
