Less on the cards

Businesses whose customers pay by credit card may be in for a boost as the OFT asks eight of the major companies to lower their charges; a cut in interest rates next week, as called for by the CBI, would also help. Both of those stories are in The Guardian, while in The Times, meanwhile, warns that customer service isn't improved by automation - which will send anyone who's ever tried getting through to a human being on their switchboard into a fit of giggles - and it has a practical guide on how to cope in small business when you're on holiday.

The Telegraph notes the same CBI comments as The Guardian but leads in on the import of manufacturing pulling into some sort of recovery. If your company is on the 'medium' side of 'small to medium enterprise' you might want to note that auditing rules may be about to change, according to the same paper. The Mail also notes the CBI comments but it reports the manufacturing recovery simply as a fall in orders.

Anyone else wanting to put in an idea of what's actually happening in manufacturing is welcome to comment...
