'Less common' lung cancer symptoms after ITV's Emily Morgan's death aged 45

It was announced over the weekend that newsreader and mum-of-two Emily Morgan had sadly passed away from cancer aged just 45.

The journalist, who was the health and science editor at ITV, was said to have died peacefully 'surrounded by family' on Friday, May 26.

It's understood that she suffered from lung cancer, which she only battled with for a short amount of time. Lung cancer is one of the most common types of the condition in the UK, with over 43,000 people being diagnosed each year.

Despite so many people living with the illness, people may be unaware of some of the lesser-known symptoms that can act as a warning sign that you should be seen by a GP.

Here are the key signs to be aware of, as reported by the Mirror.

According to the NHS, some of the lung cancer symptoms that aren't always as common are:

  • changes in the appearance of your fingers, such as becoming more curved or their ends becoming larger (this is known as finger clubbing)
  • difficulty swallowing (dysphagia) or pain when swallowing
  • wheezing
  • a hoarse voice
  • swelling of your face or neck
  • persistent chest or shoulder pain

As well as the above, there are some symptoms that do tend to show up more.

These include:

  • a cough that does not go away after 3 weeks
  • a long-standing cough that gets worse
  • chest infections that keep coming back
  • coughing up blood
  • an ache or pain when breathing or coughing
  • persistent breathlessness
  • persistent tiredness or lack of energy
  • loss of appetite or unexplained weight loss

Emily has been described as 'kind' and 'full of humanity' by her colleagues after it was announced she had passed away from lung cancer.

She played a huge role in the reporting of the Covid-19 pandemic, particularly when it came to exposing the pressures NHS staff were under.

ITV's royal editor Chris Ship paid tribute, tweeting: "She was such a beautiful person and a dear friend.

"As Health Editor, Emily was fearless in reporting Covid to the nation in 2020. Talented, kind, full of humanity."

ITV Network News editor Andrew Dagnell also paid tribute, saying that the channel was saddened by the death of their "remarkable colleague".

Meanwhile, colleague Lucrezia Millarini said: "What a privilege to have known, laughed with and worked with this wonderful woman. I'm so sorry she's gone. Our newsroom and our programmes will not be the same. Every bit of love to Emily's family. I can't imagine their loss right now."

"Emily was a brilliant journalist whose coverage of Covid in particular was exceptional. She will be hugely missed and our thoughts are with her colleagues, friends and, most of all, her family."
