Leslie Golf Club in Fife set on fire by 'malicious vandals' in the middle of the night

A popular local golf club in Fife was torched last night in a fire that is currently being treated as possibly 'malicious' according to 'initial police reports'.

Scottish Fire and Rescue raced to the scene of the garage at Leslie Golf Club at around 3am last night after reports that it was up in flames.

The golf club has now been closed and cornered off by police who are carrying out further investigations to establish what happened.

According to a spokesperson at the club, the fire is currently being treated as "malicious".

The golf club announced the fire on Facebook saying: "Called out 3am by police - Informed our garage had been set on fire.

"Fire and Police in attendance - initial reports are that it is malicious.

"Area has been cordoned off and is now a crime scene awaiting further investigations - police presence ongoing.

"For now, golf course closed until further notice.

"Will post more information in regards to the situation after police investigation."

A spokesperson for Leslie Golf Club told Edinburgh Live: "Initial reports from the fire service thought it may be malicious, however, we do have crime investigation and fire investigation teams coming out later today.

"We still have the police here so it's taped off and it's a crime scene.

"We have had a tremendous amount of support from local people in the community and we are so uplifted by that - a joiner even offered to come out and help.

"We were coming to the end of a five-year regeneration project and we are in the process of opening up a cafe and this is now a real step back."

Edinburgh Live has contacted the police for comment.
