The NFL has a long-standing business model of focusing on what a player can do for me now, and if your production doesn’t match your cost, then the liability has to be cut. A move that was expected but still shocking, LeSean McCoy has been cut by the Buffalo Bills.
McCoy is the Philadelphia Eagles all-time leading rusher, a six-time Pro Bowler (2011, 2013–2017) and a two-time first-team All-Pro (2011, 2013). With the Bills choosing to roll with Devin Singletary and Frank Gore, McCoy is now a free agent.
The talented running back could have about 15 different suitors on the open market, but with several championships hungry NFL teams in need of a running back, here are four potential landing spots for Shady McCoy.
Texans
With Lamar Miller out for the season with a torn ACL, McCoy would provide a nice change of pace for the newly acquired Duke Johnson and he’ll also take away the pressure of the former Browns running back shouldering the load. The Texans have Super Bowl aspirations with DeShaun Watson at quarterback and the unproven talent on the depth chart simply isn’t enough.
Raiders
The circus can always use some extra entertainment and McCoy could play a valuable mentor role with the first-round pick Josh Jacobs and change-of-pace back Jalen Richard. Jon Gruden wants to win now and he’s always up for a motivated reclamation project.
Cowboys
With Ezekiel Elliott prepared to miss games, McCoy could provide the same type of mentorship to Tony Pollard. Once Elliott returns, the Cowboys backfield with Zeke, Pollard, and McCoy could rival any skill group across the league.
Chiefs
Like the Texans, you can never have enough talent on a loaded offense and McCoy would allow Tyreek Hill to roam in even freer space. McCoy outrushed both Damian Williams (256 rushing yards in 2018) and Carlos Hyde (189 rushing yards) and would provide Patrick Mahomes another elite weapon in the screen game as well.
