Les Snead compares signing Eric Weddle to Andrew Whitworth in 2017

NFL careers are typically short for most players, but every so often, there are guys who continue to play at a very high level deep into their careers. Tom Brady is certainly someone who comes to mind, having won three Super Bowls after turning 37, but the Los Angeles Rams have two such players of their own.

Andrew Whitworth is the oldest offensive line in football at 37 years old and is returning for his 14th NFL season in 2019. Eric Weddle isn’t quite that old, but being 34 at the safety position is certainly uncommon.

There are clear similarities between Weddle and Whitworth, both in age, leadership and experience. They were also acquired in similar manners, signing short-term deals at the end of their careers to chase a title with the Rams.

That’s exactly why Les Snead compared the two during Weddle’s introductory press conference on Tuesday.

“Eric Weddle signing is very similar to probably Andrew Whitworth signing in that I think he definitely helps the Rams now, but I do think when he does decide to move to the next chapter in life, all of our young players – on defense and on offense – will be better for him being a Ram,” Snead said.

Whitworth signed with the Rams in 2017 and spent the last two years playing at an elite level. He’s a huge reason the Rams’ offensive line is as good as it is, locking down the left side next to Rodger Saffold for the last two seasons.

Weddle is highly respected like Whitworth is, bringing leadership and experience to the defensive side of the ball. He’ll pair with John Johnson III to give the Rams one of the best safety tandems in the league and he’s already excited about the combo.

Weddle is a valuable addition to the secondary and locker room, one that will have an impact on just about everyone in L.A.
