Les Rolling Stones? Mick Jagger surprises with fluent French interview

Les Rolling Stones play on. After launching the band’s new album Hackney Diamonds at a gig with Lady Gaga on Thursday, energetic Sir Mick Jagger, 80, has been touring TV studios. He even did an interview in French. Sir Mick, who is fluent in French and also speaks German and Spanish, revealed on Brut TV that Hackney Diamonds is not the Rolling Stones’ final album and that they are half-way through recording a follow-up. He also joked that the Beatles vs Stones rivalry is “un ancien question”. Sir Mick learnt French at school and now owns properties in France, including a 16th-century castle.

“I spoke French from when I was a child, from when I was 11, in school and then I used to travel to France — my parents would take me,” he said.

He also dropped into the Saturday Night Live studio in New York at the weekend for another gig with Lady Gaga. As part of show he joined in with a Spanish soap opera spoof, spoke Spanish and also dressed as a nun.

On Thursday evening at Racket NYC, Sir Mick led the Stones in a seven-song set to celebrate the launch of their new album. They started with Shattered, their 1978 single, and played old favourites Tumbling Dice and Jumpin’ Jack Flash before getting into their new material.

They played Angry, the first single from Hackney Diamonds, along with new tracks Whole Wide World and Bite My Head Off. For the encore, the band invited Lady Gaga on stage to join them for the first live performance of Sweet Sounds of Heaven.
