Les Reed dead: Sir Tom Jones leads tributes as songwriter behind Delilah dies

Sir Tom Jones has paid tribute to songwriter Les Reed who has died at the age of 83.

Talented Les co-wrote some of Sir Tom's biggest hits, Delilah and It's Not Unusual.

Sharing his condolences on Instagram , the Welsh crooner said Les' music would live on forever.

The Voice star wrote: "So sorry to hear the news of the passing of my friend and colleague Les Reed. ⁣

"Les was a gifted songwriter & arranger who was instrumental in penning many a hit, including two important songs for me; ‘It’s Not Unusual’ and ‘Delilah’.

"Les was a lovely man, a legend in the world of songwriting whose legacy will live through his music. RIP Les."

As well as penning songs made popular by Tom Jones, Les also co-wrote Engelbert Humperdinck's The Last Waltz.


His family released a statement following news of his death saying they were 'immensely proud' of all he achieved.

"We are all so immensely proud of everything Les achieved in his incredible lifetime.

"We know that his name will be remembered for what he did for music and that he will always live through his songs and compositions for the rest of time."

Les was also well known to Leeds United fans as the co-writer of Leeds! Leeds! Leeds! - the B-side to the club's 1973 FA Cup final single.

The tune became known as Marching on Together and continues to be sung on the terraces.

Les also performed himself as a pianist in The John Barry Seven and conducted his own orchestra for more than ten years.
