Leros fire: Blaze engulfs holiday island leaving '50 swimmers trapped on beach'

At least 50 people were trapped on a beach after a huge blaze swept across the Greek island of Leros.

The 'uncontrollable' fire broke out at around 12pm in dry grass near the island's main port of Laki before spreading to a pine forest.

Authorities were forced to close the road leading to the beach, leaving up to 60 people trapped, who have since been rescued by boat.

The Navy was drafted in to help fire fighters bring the blaze under control and helicopters with carriers of water helped extinguish the blaze.

According to Mayor Michael Colia, the fire is now under control and no homes or lives are at risk, reports Europost.

There were reports Leros Hospital was evacuated but it appears patients have stayed put.

Leros has no fire brigade, except for one seasonal firefighter who rushed to the scene with other officials with water tanks.

Eight hikers from the 1st EMAK fire department in Athens helped fight the fire on the ground and a helicopter was sent from Samos.

The fire spread thanks to very strong winds after 26mph winds and temperatures of 29C in the area.

The fire comes just over a month after seven different fires broke out at the same time on the island in the area of Irene Chrysovalantou.

Officials were investigating whether the fires in grasslands were arson attacks.

Leros is part of the Dodecanese island group, located between Patmos and Kalymnos.
