Leopardstown racing result saves bookies millions as punters left cursing their luck

Several bookmakers were saved from a seven-figure payout as a 40-1 outsider took the Leopardstown finale.

Lily Du Berlais came to the rescue in a tight finish to the bumper on day two of the Dublin Racing Festival.

Favourite backers were hoping 5-4 shot Pink In The Park would become the seventh winning favourite from eight races.

And for a brief moment it looked as though some big accas would be landed, as she edged ahead on the run to the line.

But it was Lily Du Berlais, the final challenger, who saw it out marginally the best from Battling Bessie.

They were among five horses dashing for the winning post, with Liberty Dance and Ashroe Diamond in close proximity.

Pink In The Park finished fifth to the relief of bookmakers Sky Bet and Paddy Power, who feared paying out millions.

Paddy Power's spokesman Paul Binfield said: "Sunday couldn’t have begun any worse with six ‘jollies’ winning in a row, including in the handicaps and all of the big four ‘short ones’, before ‘lady luck’ struck for the layers with Call Me Lyreen prevailing at 20-1.

“Lily Du Berlais’ photograph will also be taking pride of place on the wall at Power Tower after winning the ‘lucky last’ at 40-1 with favourite Pink In The Park being furiously backed for bumper kings Willie and Patrick Mullins and her victory has helped save us a significant seven-figure pay out today.”

The first six races were won by favourites, with all of the big names entering the winners' enclosure.

Honeysuckle (1-5f), the headline act, won her third Chanelle Pharma Irish Champion Hurdle.

Galopin Des Champs (4-9f), one of the most exciting young chasers in recent years, took his form to Grade 1 level in race two.

His trainer Willie Mullins, who had a 234-1 four-timer at the track on Saturday, was celebrating again when Chacun Pour Soi (4-7f) raced clear in the Ladbrokes Dublin Chase.

And like his stablemates, Sir Gerhard (8-13f) warmed up for the 2022 Cheltenham Festival with victory in the Tattersalls Ireland Novice Hurdle.

Birchdale (9-2f) and Party Central (7-4f) also obliged for followers of the market leaders.

But some bets were foiled with Pink In The Park's defeat at the end of the afternoon.

Representatives for Coral and William Hill said punters still finished well in front on the day.

"Hot favourites Galopin Des Champs, Chacun Pour Soi, Honeysuckle and Sir Gerhard were always going to feature in plenty of accumulators on day two of this year’s Dublin Racing Festival, and so it proved, with wins for all four meaning there was no escape for us," said Coral's David Stevens.

"On top of that, Party Central got favourite backers off to a great start, and with Birchdale landing a gamble in the feature handicap chase to add insult to injury, this really is a Sunday to forget for the layers.”

William Hill Spokesperson, Rupert Adams, said: “It’s a been a huge day for favourite-backers and obviously very costly for us, with lots of lumpy accas and plenty of ante-post bets for Cheltenham shaping up nicely too. The favourite getting beat in the last helped us dodge a big bullet, but it’s still been a very expensive day."
