Leopardstown betting tips: Peter O'Hehir's selections for Thursday's horse racing action

Bank on Basic Law to continue the good form of Ger Lyons and Colin Keane in the Leopardstown Golf Centre Rated race tonight.

Former champion Keane is already on the 37-winner mark for the season, 12 ahead of reigning champion Donnacha O’Brien.

And Basic Law is expected to add to Keane’s tally by building on two successes at Gowran Park.

He beat subsequent winners Geneticist and Snapraeceps in his maiden over seven furlongs before going on to outpoint Sherkali and National Guard in a one-mile conditions event.

He still looked raw on the latter occasion, suggesting there’s more to come from the gelded son of Lawman.

The drop back to seven furlongs shouldn’t trouble the Glenburnie runner. And he’s napped to beat Jim Bolger’s Western Dawn, off the track since winning a six-furlong maiden in Naas on the opening day of the season in March.

Winner of his maiden on this track last October, the Dermot Weld-trained Rakan should prove too strong for his two rivals in the King George V Cup.

The Sea The Stars colt was highly-tried on his seasonal debut when fourth to Broome in the Group 3 Derrinstown Stud Derby Trial at this venue last month, giving the impression he’d improve for the run and appreciate a step-up in trip.

Today’s extra two furlongs should suit Rakan, the mount of Chris Hayes. And he should outclass recent maiden winners Barbados (Navan) and Eminent Authority (Killarney), representing Aidan and Joseph O’Brien respectively.

In the Glencairn, I like the Jim Bolger-trained Flight Risk, although he recorded the most recent of his three career wins in the Group 3 Ballycorus Stakes at Leopardstown almost two years ago.

Now an eight-year-old, Kevin Manning’s mount is difficult to win with. But he produced a hugely encouraging seasonal reappearance effort at the Curragh recently, when runner-up to progressive three-year-old Jassaar in a competitive handicap, and he sets the standard.
