Leonardo DiCaprio has confessed he still has “no idea” what happened at the end of Inception.
The Oscar winner starred in Christopher Nolan’s 2010 blockbuster, which concludes on an ambiguous note as to whether DiCaprio’s character is in the real world or still stuck in a dream.
Speaking about being confused by their own projects while appearing alongside Brad Pitt on Marc Maron’s WTF Podcast, DiCaprio said: “[It’s] like Inception for me. What happened? I have no idea.”
He continued, “You’re just focused on your character, man. I do get involved [with the story], but when it came to Christopher Nolan and his mind and how it was was all pieced together, everyone was trying to constantly put that puzzle together.”
When Maron asked him if the movie made sense, DiCaprio responded, “It depends on the eye of the beholder, I guess.”
In the same conversation, Pitt also revealed that he didn’t completely understand certain plot points in his recent film Ad Astra, after Maron enquired about the film’s ending.
“I’m not going to explain it to you,” Pitt said. “I can’t explain it either.”
Fans have endlessly debated Inception’s final scene since its release. In 2010, Michael Caine suggested that DiCaprio’s character is no longer in a dream state at the end of the film.
“If I’m there it’s real, because I’m never in the dream,” Caine explained. “I’m the guy who invented the dream.”
DiCaprio was frequently the butt of jokes at this past weekend’s Golden Globes awards. Pitt referenced his death scene in Titanicduring his Best Supporting Actor acceptance speech, while ceremony host Ricky Gervais poked fun at his history of dating much younger women.
