Leona Maguire shoots incredible round of 61 to equal lowest in major history

Irish golfer Leona Maguire shot a superb 61 on the final day of the Amundi Evian Championship in France, a score which equalled the lowest round in major history.

The Cavan golfer finished off her record-equalling round with four consecutive birdies and she had 10 in total in her final round to match the record set by Hyo Joo Kim of South Korea. Kim shot the same score at the same course in 2014.

South Korea’s Jeongeun Lee6 also carded a 61 during’s Friday action at the event.

The big finish from Maguire left her on 13 under for the tournament.

Maguire shot a 69 on the opening day and followed it up with rounds of 70 and 71 Friday and Saturday.

Despite trailing Lee6 by 15 shots going into the final round, Maguire went 10 under for the day and took an early clubhouse lead.

It wasn't enough, however, and she ended up finishing five shots off Lee6 and Minjee Lee of Australia in a tie for sixth.

Lee6 and Lee locked horns in a playoff, with Lee's birdie on the 18th enough to secure her the title.
