Leona Maguire's bid for maiden LPGA Tour title comes up just short

Leona Maguire's bid to win her first LPGA Tour title camp up agonisingly short on Sunday.

The Cavan golfer finished in second place and two shots behind American winner Nelly Korda.

After leading by three come the end of Friday's play, Maguire ended the third day three shots off the 20-under pace set by Korda.

Maguire, playing with the American in the final grouping, needed a fast start and got it with birdies on the 2nd, 3rd and 4th holes.

And with Korda's bogey on the 4th hole the pair were tied for the lead and four clear of the chasing pack.

It turned into a showdown between four-time LPGA Tour winner Korda and former amateur number one Maguire searching for her debut victory.

Korda took the initiative on the back nine with an eagle on the par five 14th hole, and she had a three-shot lead with three to play.

But Maguire hit a brilliant approach shot into the 16th to set up a birdie and the gap was one when Korda dropped a shot on the same hole.

On the 18th hole Maguire hit a perfectly-struck fairway wood into the heart of the green on the par five, with Korda missing the green with her second shot.

However when Korda pitched it close to the pin Maguire knew she had to hole her long-range eagle putt.

Maguire gave the putt every chance but it didn't drop and Korda was able to hole her birdie putt for the victory.

26-year-old Maguire missed her return putt but it mattered little with second place already secured.
