Leona Maguire leads Mediheal Championship after carding nine birdies in opening round

Leona Maguire has the lead at the LPGA Mediheal Championship in California after carding nine birdies in a brilliant opening round.

The Cavan golfer shot a seven-under-par 65 at Lake Merced Golf Club, carding birdies in four of her first six holes on the back nine.

She bogeyed the 16th, but then carded three successive birdies before further birdies at the fifth and eighth.

Maguire had led by four shots before Thailand's Thidapa Suwannapura carded an opening round 66, leaving the Irishwoman with a one-shot lead at the end of the first day.

Speaking after her round, Maguire said: “It’s a tough golf course. You really have to hit a lot of fairways, a lot of greens. I’ve been playing nice as of late. Things just haven’t been quite clicking, and they clicked nicely this morning.

"I suppose first arriving here it felt like home. It’s a lot of the same style of golf course, same weather as home. I got a nice feeling straight away when we arrived on Monday."

Meanwhile, Antrim's Stephanie Meadow had a disappointing first round, which included a double bogey and six bogeys in her last 11 holes. She finished on eight over par.
