Leona Maguire battles to remain in contention at LPGA event in California

Leona Maguire battled well to remain only one shot off the lead after the second round of the Mediheal Championship in California.

The Cavan woman took a one-shot lead into Friday's round after a blistering opening seven-under par 65.

But she began her second round with three straight bogeys before steading the ship and making birdies on the 7th and 9th holes.

Maguire then played her back nine in level par, mixing two birdies with two bogeys, to shoot a 73 and finish in a share of second with American Lauren Kim, whose compatriot Danielle Kang led the field at seven-under after a 66.

"I got off to a rough start and bogeyed my first three holes," Maguire said after her round.

"But I'm really proud of how I sort of hung in there and battled back and holed some really nice putts and got some really nice up and downs and keep the round going. Kept myself in the tournament."
