Leon Osman doesn't think West Ham United's opener should've stood vs Leeds United

Former Everton midfielder Leon Osman doesn't think West Ham United's opening goal should've stood during their 2-0 win over Leeds United in the FA Cup third-round on Sunday afternoon.

The Hammers took the lead through Manuel Lanzini, who poked home from close-range, but there was a lengthy VAR check for a possible offside in the build-up.

A deflected shot from Nicola Vlasic appeared to roll into Jarrod Bowen's path, who was in an offside position, but the ball bounced off Illan Mesier and Lanzini steered home the rebound.

The officials decided to look over the situation for a number of minutes, but decided to give the goal, which angered a number of Leeds players and supporters in the ground.

Despite a valiant second-half effort, David Moyes' side doubled their advantage late on as Bowen slotted home after some neat work from Michail Antonio to book their place in round four.

Although Osman believes it should've been given as offside, he offered an explanation to describe why the officials chose to give the goal, rather than rule it out.

Speaking on BBC Match of the Day, he said: "I certainly don't think it should've stood. In this moment, [Nicola] Vlasic has the shot and Bowen is offside, there's no doubt about it.

"As it runs on, he reaches for the ball and touches the ball. We all think that should be given offside. But I think if you look how quickly he flashes across the scene, Vlasic and the goalkeeper have both got eyes on each-other and he doesn't see Bowen coming.

"He comes across and doesn't actually influence it that much. Lanzini, Bowen and the goalkeeper get on it with it, so that is why I don't think it has been given."

Next up for the Whites is another trip to the London Stadium next weekend as they try to record a second successive Premier League victory after beating Burnley.
