Leon King given Rangers Europa League chance as Steven Gerrard takes close look at teenage prospect

Highly-rated Rangers teen Leon King joined first-team training ahead of their Europa League clash with Standard Liege.

The 16-year-old was courted by Manchester United and Arsenal before he signed his first professional contract at Rangers.

And now he's been handed a huge show of faith by being promoted to Steven Gerrard's first team squad for training before they flew to Belgium on Wednesday.

King was pictured alongside Rangers coach Tom Culhsaw as the players were put through their paces at Ibrox ahead of the Europa League opener on Thursday night.

It's unlikely he'll be involved on Thursday night but it's a show of support for the teenager with Rangers naming just three first team centre backs in their squad for the European competition.

Connor Goldson, Filip Helander and Leon Balogun are all in but George Edmundson was left out with Rangers needing to leave space in their squad because of a lack of homegrown players.

Calvin Bassey can also fill in at centre back but King has impressed in reserve and youth fixtures and could even be handed a chance if Steven Gerrard is hit by injuries.

With Balogun and Helander having suffered injury problems already this season, that is a possibility and it could be a sign of how highly-rated he is.

Rangers have been criticised in recent years for their failure to bring players through from the academy.

Nathan Patterson is the only youngster who has been a regular in the first team squad this season while the likes of Dapo Mebude, Kai Kennedy and Josh McPake have failed to push through since making their debuts.
