Leon Dajaku makes his debut as Sunderland make eight changes at Wigan in Carabao Cup

Lee Johnson handed deadline day signing Leon Dajaku his Sunderland debut in the Carabao Cup third round clash at Wigan Athletic.

The on-loan Union Berlin winger was included as one of eight changes to the side that started Sunderland's weekend league draw at Fleetwood Town, as Johnson took the opportunity to rest some of his key players.

The three players who were retained from Saturday's XI were Dennis Cirkin, Bailey Wright, and Luke O'Nien.

But Lee Burge replaced Thorben Hoffmann in goal, while Niall Huggins came in at right-back in place of Carl Winchester and Frederik Alves played in central defence instead of Callum Doyle.

Skipper Corry Evans took the place of Dan Neil in midfield alongside O'Nien.

There was an all-new front four with Dajaku playing wide on the right, with Alex Pritchard in the number ten position, Aiden O'Brien - who scored a hat-trick at Blackpool in the last round of this competition - wide on the left, and Nathan Broadhead leading the line.

They replaced Lynden Gooch, Elliot Embleton, Aiden McGeady, and Ross Stewart.

Young winger Ellis Taylor was included amongst the subs, alongside Hoffmann, Doyle, Embleton, Stewart, Neil, and Tom Flanagan.

Wigan boss Leam Richardson made nine changes, in his case to the side that beat Accrington Stanley in the league on Saturday.

Only goalkeeper Ben Amos and midfielder Jordan Cousins kept their places.

In came former Sunderland loanee Jordan Jones, Tom Pearce, Gwion Edwards, Gavin Massey, Jason Kerr, Curtis Tilt, Kieran Lloyd, Scott Smith, Stephen Humphrys.

Former Sunderland men Charlie Wyke and Max Power were at the game, but were not included in the matchday 18.
