Leon Dajaku a doubt ahead of Sunderland's trip to Gillingham as Lynden Gooch update issued

Leon Dajaku is a doubt ahead of Sunderland's trip to Gillingham this weekend after reporting back from international duty carrying a minor injury.

The on-loan Union Berlin wideman has been away with the Germany U20 squad, and returned to the Academy of Light with a thigh strain.

He has not been ruled out of Saturday's game at the Priestfield Stadium at this stage, but Sunderland's medical staff will make a check on him before a final decision is taken on whether he will travel and/or be involved.

Sunderland assistant head coach Jamie McAllister said: "All the lads who were away are now back and they trained this morning.

"Everyone is fit, which is positive.

"The only exception is Leon Dajaku who has come back with a minor problem.

"It's a slight thigh strain.

"We're monitoring him and we will see how he is over the next 24 hours or so."

Aiden McGeady is also being assessed as he nears a return after missing Sunderland's defeat at Portsmouth in their last league game due to an ankle injury.

"Aiden trained today and he is coming along well," said McAllister.

He's been doing a lot of work over the last 10 days but he is still feeling it [the injury] a bit in certain movements, so we are monitoring him and we'll see how he is ahead of the weekend.

Lynden Gooch has been out of action since mid-September with a foot injury and he continues to make good progress in his recovery, with a return to training likely at some stage next week.

McAllister said: "Lynden has been out for three-and-a-half weeks now.

"He has had an injection but he has been out running over the last couple of days and he is coming along nicely.

"Saturday will probably come too soon for him, but he is ticking along and hopefully he will be back out on the grass and training next week."
