Leon Balogun stays at Rangers over winter as AFCON dream ended by injury drop out

Rangers will now only have one representative at the Africa Cup of Nations after Leon Balogun withdrew from the Nigeria squad.

Balogun was set to join up with the Super Eagles for a crack at the Cameroon tournament in January and early February.

But the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) have revealed he hasn't recovered from injury in time and will stay in Glasgow instead.

Joe Aribo remains in the 28-man squad while Calvin Bassey was not named in the final list despite being in a provisional squad.

The NFF have called up players to replace drop-outs, which also include Watford's Emmanuel Dennis and Napoli striker Victor Osimhen.

But Bassey isn't one of them and that means the only player Rangers will miss when they return from the winter break is midfielder Aribo, arguably the club's player of the season.

That means Balogun, if fit, will be available when the club play their first matches after the winter break, beginning with a trip to Aberdeen on January 18 with a February 2 derby meeting with Celtic to come weeks later.
