Leon Balogun's instant redemption as Rangers star recovers from becoming Nigeria fall guy to send Super Eagles soaring

Rangers defender Leon Balogun silenced his Super Eagles critics when he netted his first ever goal for Nigeria.

The 33-year-old was hammered in the Nigerian press after a botched clearance in the 89th minute of Thursday's match with Central African Republic.

The Rangers centre-back's misplaced header landed at the feet of Karl Namganda, who slotted home with virtually the last kick of the game and nicked a 1-0 win in the Qatar 2022 qualifier.

CAR are ranked 124th in the world and it was the first time Nigeria have lost a World Cup qualifying fixture at home in 25 years.

But in the return fixture against CAR on Sunday afternoon, Balogun earned his redemption.

The defender found himself unmarked in the area after 29 minutes, executing a cool finish from a deep cross and giving Gernot Rohr's men the lead in Douala, Cameroon.

A win would send the Super Eagles five points clear in their quest to reach Qatar next winter

Balogun's Rangers teammate, Joe Aribo, also started the match ahead of the Ibrox club's return to domestic action against Hearts next weekend.
