Leon Balogun Rangers injury latest as Steven Gerrard gives Ryan Jack update ahead of Motherwell clash

Leon Balogun will miss Rangers ’ weekend clash with Motherwell as he follows head injury protocols.

The Nigerian suffered a head knock after colliding with St Mirren striker Jon Obika during Wednesday night’s dramatic Betfred Cup quarter-final in Paisley.

The Buddies netted a stoppage time winner to book their spot in the semis and dump Steven Gerrard ’s side out.

Balogun requited treatment for several minutes of the park before being taken off.

Now the Ibrox boss has confirmed the defender won’t be available for their Scottish Premiership encounter on Saturday.

It will also come too soon for Ryan Jack. The midfielder hasn’t featured since The gers’ 4-0 thumping of former club Aberdeen last month.

And while he’s making progress, he won’t be rushed back to face the Steelmen with the crunch top of the table encounter with Celtic on the horizon.

"Balogun is unavailable for tomorrow as we are following medical protocol after a head injury,” said Gerrard.

"Ryan Jack is close but won't make the weekend.”

The league leaders will be looking to take advantage of Celtic being on Scottish Cup duty this weekend.

The Hoops face Hearts at Hampden in Sunday’s final, so three points for Rangers would see them increase the gap at the top to 16 points.
