Leon Balogun injury update as Rangers boss Steven Gerrard rules defender out

Rangers will be without new boy Leon Balogun after he picked up a quad injury against St Johnstone on Wednesday night.

The centre back has started his Ibrox career well but was replaced at half time by Filip Helander during the 3-0 win.

And now Steven Gerrard has revealed he will miss Sunday's game against Livingston, with the club awaiting scan results before determining the full extent of the problem.

The Rangers boss is yet to decide on who will replace him with George Edmundson and Filip Helander both impressing during their time on the pitch so far this season.

Gerrard will also have Kemar Roofe available again despite a poor challenge on the Rangers new boy from Jason Kerr, although he's likely to be left on the bench again.

He said: "Leon Balogun won't be available for the weekend, he has a small quad problem and we are waiting on results from a scan.

"Filip Helander played great at the weekend and George Edmundson had a great pre-season so I will make a decision at the weekend.

"Kemar Roofe is okay after that severe challenge. It is important to understand he is in a pre-season schedule with us at the moment, for example, he had a double session yesterday but he will still be available for selection on the weekend although most likely from the bench."

Ryan Kent has started the season in fine form and grabbed a brilliant goal against Saints on Wednesday evening.

And Gerrard admits he’s loving the former Liverpool youngster being so happy in his game and playing without fear.

He added: "We want Ryan (Kent) to play with freedom and go and express himself, he is smiling, sharp, and enjoying his football and posting numbers in terms of goals and assists after the benefit of a full pre-season."
