Leon Balogun agrees Rangers switch as Steven Gerrard lands defender on two-year deal

Leon Balogun has agreed to join Rangers after the defender became a free agent.

Manager Steven Gerrard has brought in the Nigeria cap on a two-year deal.

Balogun, who was just relegated with Wigan Athletic, is set to arrive at Ibrox on a free transfer.

The centre-back has been brought in as cover with fellow stopper Nikola Katic out injured for the foreseeable future.

The deal could be announced as early as Friday afternoon.

32-year-old Balogun was first capped for the Super Eagles in 2014.

He began his career in Germany, starring for Bundesliga sides such as Hannover, Werder Bremen, Fortuna Dusseldorf and Mainz.

He then moved to Brighton in 2018 but found first-team opportunities hard to come by and moved to the Latics on loan in January.

Following the expiration of his Brighton contract this summer he signed a short-term deal with the Lancashire side.

But they were relegated on the final day of the Championship on Wednesday, following a 12 point deduction for going into administration.
