Leon Bailey commits international future to Jamaica as he's named in Gold Cup squad

Bayer Leverkusen winger Leon Bailey has committed his international future to Jamaica ahead of this summer's Gold Cup.

The winger - who has been linked with Arsenal , Manchester United and Chelsea - had previously explored the possibility of playing for England or Germany.

But he confirmed his commitment to Jamaica on Wednesday, announcing he will represent the Reggae Boyz after he was named in the country's preliminary Gold Cup squad

Also in the squad is former United midfielder Ravel Morrison, who now plays for Östersund in Sweden.

Bailey had previously turned down the chance to play for Jamaica. He accepted a call-up in 2018 but then refused to play after the Jamaican Football Federation reportedly reneged on an agreement to call up his younger brother, Kyle Butler.

Bailey was among the names in Jamaica’s 40-man provisional squad published this week ahead of the Gold Cup.

He said in a tweet: "I promise to wear the colors black green and gold with honor, pride, and dignity while aiming to be a positive role model for kids with a dream."

Bailey scored 12 goals in 2017-18 - his breakthrough campaign at Leverkusen - but managed five in the season just gone.

Jamaica open the Gold Cup against Honduras in Kingston on June 17, in the competition's first match in the Carribean.

After that, the Reggae Boyz face El Salvador in Houston before playing Curacao in Los Angeles.
