Leo Varadkar wants public to give Fine Gael some 'ideas for a better Ireland'

Tánaiste Leo Varadkar has asked for the public to give Fine Gael 'ideas for a better Ireland' in a new statement.

The party which is currently in power alongside Fianna Fáil want the people to submit their proposals, with one person getting to meet Mr Varadkar himself virtually to discuss them.

Mr Varadkar said: “I’m looking forward to hearing from people up and down the country on how they think we can make Ireland a better place to live, work, raise children, receive an education, start a business and grow old.

“It might be a major policy initiative that will be completely transformative and change our country for the better. It might also be something smaller, that would make a real difference at a local and community level.

“Whatever your idea is, we really want to hear it. The winning entrant will have an opportunity to meet with me and pitch the idea over a video call – and you’re welcome to bring your friends and colleagues along as well."

Those who wish to enter can do so via the Fine Gael website, with ideas needing to be a maximum of 250 words.

The Tánaiste continued: “I want to hear from as many people as possible, from a diverse range of backgrounds, occupations, areas etc. The more ideas we receive from you, the better.

“Tell your friends, families and neighbours about the initiative and encourage younger people in your life to have a think about it as well."

According to reports, Mr Varadkar is set to push for the reopening of society when a big decision on Ireland's lockdown is made next week.

NPHET will meet on Wednesday to discuss the current epidemiological situation in the country before sending their advice to government.

This will be considered by leading politicians at Cabinet next week before Taoiseach Micheal Martin makes an announcement.

A final decision is expected to be confirmed by next Tuesday or Wednesday.
