Leo Varadkar wants 'early Valentine's Day massacre' for political enemies as momentum heads for February election

Leo Varadkar has said Fine Gael is prepared for an election on February 7th and that he wants an early “Valentine’s Day Massacre” for his political enemies.

Massive momentum is leading towards a snap election being called in the coming days for early February - with the Irish Mirror understanding that February 7th is the preferred date.

The Irish Mirror asked the Taoiseach this morning if his party was ready for February 7th ahead of Valentine’s Day.

He said that the right time for an election is when the people of the country want it, not when any particular political party wants it.

The Taoiseach is essentially conceding that his preferred time of May is now way too late because the whole country is crying out for an election well before that.

He said: “It could be the love of the people (for Fine Gael) and hopefully a Valentine’s Day massacre for our opponents.

“But what I’ve consistently said is that when the time is right for an election, it should be at the right time for the country, not necessarily the right time for any political party, or any particular politician.

“When you’re in politics you always have to be prepared for an election and at the same time you can always be better prepared for an election.

“But that’s not what matters, what matters is when’s the right time for the people.”
