Leo Varadkar under pressure to address Government 'leak' claims

Tanaiste Leo Varadkar is under increasing pressure to address claims he shared a confidential Government document with a GP.

Claims in the Village Magazine say that the Fine Gael leader gave the document outlining a GP pay deal agreed with the Irish Medical Organisation to another representative group for doctors.

And multiple TDs and the opposition have called on Mr Varadkar to address the claims.

Sinn Féin spokesperson on Enterprise, Trade, Employment and Workers' Rights Louise O’Reilly TD has said that Tánaiste and Fine Gael leader Leo Varadkar has serious questions to answer.

TD O'Reilly said: "“This is an extremely serious situation and the Fine Gael leader needs to make a full statement on the matter immediately.

“This isn’t tittle tattle or indiscretion. This is an allegation that, while he was Taoiseach, Leo Varadkar disclosed commercially sensitive information to a personal friend who was a senior member of a rival organisation to the one that the government was in negotiations with on a contract worth hundreds of millions of euro.

"This is information that could have been of financial benefit to this rival organisation.
“There are laws in place to stop such insider dealing from happening.
“If he has done it in this case, how many other times could this have happened and at what cost to the taxpayer?"

Paul Murphy of People Before Profit said: "We will be writing to the Business Committee to request that time is set aside on Tuesday in the Dáil for Leo Varadkar to make a statement about this matter and to answer questions about it from TDs.

"Any attempt by Fine Gael or their government partners to shield him from such questioning would make them complicit and confirm people’s perceptions about a political culture of insiders looking after insiders.

"If there is substance to the allegations, he should face criminal prosecution. Clearly, it would not be tenable for Mr. Varadkar to continue as a Minister, nevermind as the Tánaiste."

The Tanaiste is expected to make a statement in the next 24 hours.
