Leo Varadkar under fire for sending fan letter to Kylie Minogue on official government paper

Star-struck Leo Varadkar penned a fan letter to Kylie Minogue – on official Government letterhead.

In the handwritten note to the Aussie star, the Taoiseach said he would “love” to welcome her to Ireland “personally”.

Mr Varadkar used Office of the Taoiseach-headed paper and signed the October 3 note “Leo V”.

The letter began “Dear Kylie, just wanted to drop you a note in advance of the concert in Dublin.

“I am really looking forward to it. I am a huge fan.

“I understand you are staying in the Merrion Hotel which is just across the street from my office in Government Buildings.

“If you like, I’d love to welcome you to Ireland personally.”

Kylie had to cancel the October 7 show due to a throat infection, and The Irish Mail on Sunday said she rang Mr Varadkar to apologise.

However, at her rescheduled gig in December, the Taoiseach, his partner Dr Matt Barrett and pals were pictured backstage at the 3Arena with the pop star.

Taoiseach Leo Varadkar calls for patience after latest Brexit vote defeat in London

But the Kylie concert was not untainted for Mr Varadkar after a Twitter user claimed the 40-year-old and his pals enjoyed a complimentary meal and drinks ahead of the show.

This prompted the Taoiseach to deny his food was paid for.

He tweeted: “I’ve been made aware of a post on social media saying I had a free meal at a concert the other night.

“This is not true. There was no meal, we only had drinks and I paid. I have the receipt to prove it too.”

Opposition politicians criticised Mr Varadkar for distracting attention from more pressing social issues.

Labour’s Aodhan O Riordain said at a time when the “news is full of debate about homelessness and educational inequality... this is from our Taoiseach”.

And Fianna Fail Senator Lorraine Clifford-Lee said Mr Varadkar should be “worrying less about your Kylie concert and more about the desperate housing situation in this country”.

This is not the first time the star-struck Taoiseach has schmoozed with celebrities.

In 2013, he posed with Terminator actor Arnold Schwarzenegger at the South by Southwest Film Festival in Texas.

And in 2017, he was pictured with magician Keith Barry at a U2 gig.
