Leo Varadkar slams John Delaney in first comments about former FAI CEO's Oireachtas Committee appearance

Taoiseach Leo Varadkar has slammed former FAI CEO John Delaney over his appearance at a meeting of the Oireachtas Committee on Sport.

Mr Varadkar hadn't commented after the Executive Vice President's performance at the committee meeting on Wednesday, but has now said he doesn't think anybody would be satisfied by Mr Delaney's refusal to answer questions about corporate governance at the FAI during his tenure as chief executive.

Speaking in Cork, Varadkar said football fans and all taxpayers would have wanted questions answered about Delaney's €100,000 loan to the Association, despite the fact that the football boss was not legally obligated to.

He told RTE that John Delaney wasn't a public servant and therefore wasn't accountable to the Oireachtas Committee on sport.

But he said the FAI and in particular Delaney were accountable to the office of the Director of Corporate Enforcement and to Sport Ireland, and argued that those bodies still have unanswered questions.

He said the Government wants Sport Ireland funding restored to the FAI so it can again be made available to local clubs, women's sport and young people.

However, he added, the association must first answer questions.
