Leo Varadkar shares festive snap as he puts up Christmas tree with partner Matt Barrett

It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas in Leo Varadkar’s flat as he shared a festive snap.

The Tanaiste and his partner Matt Barrett posed beside the gorgeous tree in their Dublin home.

Taking to Instagram, the Fine Gael leader said: “Am 16 years in my flat but never got a Christmas tree before.

"Was never home. This year’s been different. Pandemic silver lining.”

Minister of State Josepha Madigan commented on the post, saying: “Gorgeous tree.”

Another well-wisher said: “Delighted you have the time this year. No job should take that from you both.”

It comes just days after Mr Varadkar said he believes the pandemic will be over in 2021 and Ireland could be back to near normality by the summer.

He thinks with vaccines, rapid testing and all the knowledge experts now have, that next year will be significantly better.

But the vaccine will have to be in place for two months before it makes a difference.

The Tanaiste told Newstalk Breakfast: "I can only give you an educated guess. With the vaccine, with the mass testing and with the better knowledge of how to treat and prevent this virus, I think the pandemic will end in 2021.

"We'd really have to be giving the vaccine for about two months before you see it really make a difference. It's a two dose vaccine."
