Leo Varadkar's message to people working from home who are missing out on considerable tax back

Leo Varadkar has reminded those that have been or are working from home that they are potentially missing out on tax breaks.

Back in April, Mr Varadkar brought forward the the Right to Disconnect bill - which allowed more people to shut off from work and have a better work-life balance once their shifts were finished.

Since the pandemic first hit these shores in March of 2020, thousands of employers shut their offices, with employees starting remote work.

Many have continued with working from home, but the requirement to do so gets removed on Friday.

Before that happens, Mr Varadkar tweeted that some people may still be missing out on tax reliefs.

He said: "If you’ve been working from home anytime over the past two years, there’s still time to claim back money on your home running costs. You can do so through revenue."

On that subject, the Government has clarified what tax reliefs members of the public can claim if they've been working from home in 2021.

And if you are or have been working from home (e-working), you may be eligible for tax relief on expenses like light, heat, telephone and broadband.

Working from home tax reliefs

Tax relief on e-working covers the additional costs of working from home. This includes:

  • Heating
  • Electricity
  • Broadband
  • Other vouched expenses where they are “wholly, exclusively and necessarily” part of your work

Items you buy, such as laptops, computers, office equipment and office furniture, are not allowable costs.

The reminder from Mr Varadkar comes just hours before the crucial meeting of the National Public Health Emergency Team on Tuesday to decide just how Ireland progresses forward.

October 22 had been marked down as a 'Freedom Day' by the public as the majority of restrictions were set to be lifted.

But this is now up in the air.
