Leo Varadkar promises to bring issue of homeless deaths before Cabinet meeting

Leo Varadkar has promised to bring the issue of homeless deaths before a Cabinet meeting.

The tragic loss of two men close to Leinster House this week has highlighted the growing problem.

The men who died were both in their 40s. They were found on Tuesday morning.

One of the bodies was discovered in a tent on Leinster Lane, which is underneath the windows of TDs offices
in LH2000, an annex of Leinster House.

Eoin O Broin today called on the Tanaiste to act now to prevent more deaths, urging him to put in place an “immediate emergency response” and increased supports.

The Sinn Fein housing spokesman said a review of the sharp increase in homeless fatalities this year announced by Housing Minister Darragh O’Brien was “welcome” but “not enough”.

Mr Varadkar responded that he would bring the matter before the weekly Cabinet meeting of ministers.

He said: “These deaths are tragedies for the families involved and we extend our sympathies to those families and all who knew them.

“I will certainly raise the issue at Cabinet.

“It is discussed in Cabinet meetings in the ordinary course of events but I will raise it again when Cabinet meets on Friday
or Tuesday.”
