Leo Varadkar leads 'get well' tributes to Mary Lou McDonald as she recovers from surgery

Sinn Fein leader Mary Lou McDonald has revealed she underwent surgery in the Rotunda Hospital last week as she thanked the "incredible" staff for their care.

Taoiseach Leo Varadkar led the get well soon wishes to Sinn Fein leader who is in hospital recovering from an operation.

The main opposition leader announced on Twitter that she is doing well after the procedure, adding that she is looking forward to getting back to work soon.

Ms McDonald tweeted: “Personal news: I had surgery on Friday and am now recovering well. I expect to be back in action in a number of weeks. A million thanks to all the incredible staff at @RotundaHospital for your excellent care and kindness. Go raibh míle maith agaibh go léir. Onwards and upwards."

Sinn Fein deputy leader, Pearse Doherty, was deputising for his boss, Ms McDonald during Leaders' Questions in the Dail on Tuesday afternoon.

Starting his contribution to Leaders’, he said: “I send my best wishes to my party leader, Deputy Mary Lou McDonald, as she recovers from her surgery.”

Mr Varadkar then paid tribute before the political jousting of the day got underway.

The Taoiseach said: “At the outset, I want to express my best wishes to Deputy McDonald, who is currently recovering from surgery. I hope that she makes a very swift recovery and will be back in action as soon as possible and as soon as she is well again.”

Tipperary independent TD, Mattie McGrath had a slot during the Leaders’ Questions slot yesterday and he also wished Mary Lou well.

He said: “Ar an gcéad dul síos, on behalf of the Rural Independents I wish a speedy recovery to an Teachta McDonald.”
