Leo Varadkar latest politician embroiled in votegate after admitting he pressed other TD's button in Dail

Leo Varadkar has become the latest politician to be embroiled in votegate.

The Taoiseach has admitted that he too was a politician that has pressed somebody else’s button in the Dáil chamber.

And the controversy has now reached the highest echelons of politics as Fianna Fáil leader, Micheál Martin, has also been roped-in to the scandal with the Taoiseach.

It all started last Saturday when the Irish Independent reported on Fianna Fáil TD Niall Collins voting six times for his party colleague, Timmy Dooley, six times when he was not in the locked Dáil chamber last Thursday.

Since then, a host of other TDs from across the political divide have been implicated, with accusations and recriminations flying around Leinster House all week.

Now it seems to have reached its zenith, with the two most senior politicians in the country getting caught up in it all.

A spokesman for the Taoiseach said this morning: “On a small number of occasions he has cast a vote for a colleague, but only ever if they were present in the chamber - as in 'present and voting' as the Constitution requires."

FF leader Mr Martin has also conceded that he voted for others on “rare occasions” and he issued a statement when the news emerged.

"I have voted on rare occasions for a colleague who would be standing next to me.

"I have never asked anyone to vote for me while not in the chamber and have never been asked to do this for anyone else.

He added: "Over the course of 17 years a colleague may have pushed a vote button for me while I was in conversation with others, but such occasions would be rare.

"I do believe that the practice of TDs pressing the voting buttons of colleagues within the Dáil should come to an end.”
