Leo Varadkar introduced to the BeReal app by group of teenagers

Leo Varadkar was caught out by the BeReal app after a group of teenagers requested he take a photo of them over the weekend.

The BeReal app works by sending out a notification asking people to immediately take a photo of themselves and the group they’re with, giving them just two minutes to upload the finished product. A notification is sent out to a person’s friends if they fail to upload in time.

Leo was approached by a group of teenagers in a Tullamore park who asked him to take their BeReal photo for them. The exchange was uploaded online, with the Tanáiste sounding confused at the request. He also inadvertently took a selfie of himself, as the app uses the front and back cameras simultaneously to document everyone involved in taking a photo.

The appeal of BeReal lies in the opportunity to show people as their authentic selves at any given moment, with no opportunity to use filters or make-up. The app was first created in 2020 but has become extremely popular in recent months, compiling an average of almost 3 million daily users.

Leo was a guest at the Tullamore Show at the weekend, a one day agricultural event running for the first time since 2019.
