Leo Varadkar has indicated up to 200 people could get back supporting their local GAA clubs at county grounds during the summer.
The Tanáiste said he was “keen” to get back to watching a match from the stands and he is “increasingly confident that that’s going to be possible over the summer.”
He was responding to Fine Gael TD Neale Richmond who asked that consideration be given to allow people back to matches, and not just trials of crowds back at sporting and cultural events.
Mr Richmond said sports organisers, fans, and players want supporters back at games in a safe manner.
Mr Varadkar said: “I’m as keen as you to get back to watching a match and to get back in the stands and I’m increasingly confident that that’s going to be possible over the summer.
“We’ll make a decision on this at the Cabinet meeting on Friday but I can say that Minister Martin and Minister Chambers have worked up some plans to allow a number of trials of outdoor sporting events with spectators, thousands of spectators, to happen across June and July.
“And hopefully we’ll be able to give the green light for that on Friday.
“And as well allow a resumption, not as trials but just as ordinary courses, of smaller numbers like 50, 100, 200, attending county grounds and smaller grounds.”
